They’re giving it away! Property in the Baltics: Every day feels like Xmas!

Our 4th newsletter reveals today that Lithuania offers more than 6,000 pristine lakes, breathtaking landscapes, and affordable real estate near Vilnius. Explore its hidden tourism gems, thriving crypto landscape, and must-see events in 2025.

1 There are over 6000 lakes in Lithuania!

Flying in to Vilnius, I’m often reminded of the old gravel country roads where I grew up in rural NZ. Pock marked with hundreds of puddles after a summer rain. It’s the same out of my window. Tiny puddles amid a sea of green.

Then.. Whammo! Skyscrapers.. runway and cheap vodka leaving duty free.

Job done. Home again.

Lithuania’s capital can be breathtaking. Hundreds of lakes mark the landscape, interrupted by ancient Forrests and city villages…

It’s fair to say the Lithuanian tourism board, in my humble opinion, needs to be sacked. In fact, so hidden are most of the gems, that I share a running joke with friends. Every time I discover a new treat here it’s.. – “Lithuania: Who knew?!!”.

Last summer it was the lakes. Dozens of them within minutes of the CBD.

Many of the inner city lakes have even been developed with board walks, man made beaches, resorts, sport facilities, picnic areas and restaurants.

Within easy reach of the city on a hot summers day (yes, it often goes well over 30 degrees here in summer), you can finish work around mid-day and head out for a lazy wallow in a pristine lake, pausing just long enough for some smoked meat and a cold local larger.

To be fair, not all local watering holes have a castle view, but  Trakai Castle(pictured opposite), and its surrounding lake tick all the boxes as a great place to start.

“Lithuanian lakes are amazing, not only is the water really warm in summer (and frozen enough in winter to skate on), but you can sail on it, swim through it, pull fish from it, and even drink it!

I’ve even seen lake houses for sale – with boat sheds for summer, and saunas for winter – less than an hour from the city and well under a hundred k. What’s not to love?”

2 Why do 89% of Lithuanians own their own home? Here’s what €80k gets you 25 min from the CBD in Vilnius (Lithuania)..

– As you enter the grounds, you will walk along decorative stone-paved paths towards the garden building, adjacent to the gazebo with a barbecue area, and beyond that you will reach the sauna building. Yep, sauna building!

– The farmhouse is neat and tidy, well built and furnished. It is for sale with all the furniture and appliances.

– The area is full of green perennial trees, fruit trees and ornamental plants. On the plot you will find a greenhouse of 21 sq.m. for your summer delights.

– The area is fenced.

– The property is located at the end of the street, so no passing cars.

– Convenient access road to the territory.

– Surrounded by farmhouses and a resident neighbourhood. The settlement is located in the vicinity of the forests of Šilėnai and Elniakampis.

“We get asked all the time about life in Europe, and often, in all the 27 EU member states we could live, why we chose Lithuania as a base of operations.

Well, the main reasons is pure quality of life.

Houses are priced so well, holiday homes are affordable, schooling is excellent (in a variety of languages), clean streets and very little if any crime. Basically, clean and easy living, with loads of income opportunities.

The second question we get asked (especially by Kiwi’s and Aussies who love dirt) is “..so what’s real estate like there”. I answer “think Auckland, or Sydney 30-40 years ago. Twenty year olds can still buy a first home with little or no help from the bank of mum and dad, and anyone not allergic to work can afford a holiday house close enough to the city to avoid road rage in summer.

The best part? Unlike in some EU states, as a resident here, you are free to buy, develop and sell real estate without restrictions.”

3 Massive changes afoot in Europes Silicone Valley? -Update for Crypto Fans and Fintech Developers

Anybody that’s been involved in the rapidly developing Crypto or Fintech industries, knows the growing, and never ending complexities around operating a legitimate business in that space.

Governments around the world are finding ways that they can clip the ticket, and to be fair, sometimes even make digital transactions on crypto marketplaces and exchanges safer for the novice trader or investor.

Perhaps the biggest change in the last few years has been government’s taking a view that any business which accepts crypto as a form of payment, is effectively trading in securities. They then lump those companies effectively in the same category as Goldman Sachs, or other Wall Street traders, who bundle junk bonds and sell them to grandmothers.

Clearly, this means massive compliance, and registration costs for innovative startups and small businesses wanting to accept crypto payments.

Many argue that a site selling digital art to keyboard warriors, has little, to nothing in common with HSBC and thus shouldn’t need a securities (or adjacent) license, or to do complex “Know Your Client” checks on members. To do so, simply stymies innovation and growth.

“purchasing cryptocurrency is not an investment but a transaction similar to exchanging euros for dollars”

In an evolving story out of Estonia though, for the first time a government in Europe has spoken out and suggested that crypto currencies are in fact, you know, currencies. Not a security like a mortgage or term deposit. This could mean that multiple businesses on the fringe of these industries are about to explode.

Whether it’s accepting crypto payments to buy a new car, or even trading properties represented by NFT’s, if the Estonian government does take a view that cryptocurrency is not a security, then I predict, hundreds, or thousands of tech startups will once again flock to Tallinn for registration, and the good people of Estonia will be circling back to the good ol’ days of gold running through the streets of Europes’ startup capital.

4 Rockin’ Rod’s Comin’ to Town! 2025 – Lithuania

…And that’s not all, rip up your jeans and tussle your hair, Guns N’ Roses is following weeks later….

As I’ve said above, I was shocked to find the natural beauty in Lithuania, and thousands of lakes to enjoy… It’s fair to say though my mind was totally blown when I learnt some of the greatest talent on the planet pumps tours through the place. Up close and personal!

Lithuania is lucky enough to host some of the best musicians on the planet, in an arena, slightly smaller than the Bristol boys cricket club.

Basically it’s a basketball hall, with some of the world’s greatest talent gyrating and pumping to our hearts content, meters away from the sweaty brow! You can damn near reach out and touch them (and I think many do).

For a unique, concert experience, with amazing local bars and clubs to follow, we highly recommend checking show dates in Lithuania on your next trip to Europe. You’ll thank us for it!

“The legendary singer and songwriter, twice inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Rod Stewart, is returning to Lithuania. The iconic artist will perform at Kaunas’ “Žalgirio” Arena on April 23rd, offering an unforgettable evening with his greatest hits, which have resonated for more than five decades. (Christ has it been that long!?! – AB)”

5 Shameless self promotion wrapped up as news… no not the BBC, this time it’s BCP!

If you’ve found any of these snippets in the last few weeks, interesting, or the information above engaging, we’d love to hear from you.

We mostly work with Australasians, who want to stay more than 90 days in Europe, get a far better tax deal, or explore a great lifestyle in all of the 27 EU member states. The content I share, as a Kiwi, is targeted towards things that I find interesting.. so I hope you do too.

If you have any stories though, questions, thoughts, or opinions, you would like to share with us, and our growing group of friends who receive this, please also send that through.

Remember, right now, living the dream in Europe is only an email away.

We hope to see you soon!

“Helping people get EU Residency, through our Gateway to Europe program, is my passion project. It’s the fun part of my day.

We get to make a whole bunch of new friends, and I get to do a whole lot of fine lunching with great people when they get here.

Most of our clients, do come by a referral or word of mouth, but lately we’ve broadened our offering a little, so I thought it was time we put out a little explainer video (or click image above) about what we do. The one above is the first in that series. I hope you enjoy.

And while I’m on the subject of enjoying, I want to take the opportunity on behalf of myself, and our little team here to wish you all the very best for a Merry Christmas with a happy and prosperous New Year!.”
